Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
