Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
