Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
